Gingival Curettage (curettage)

The first stage in the treatment of inflammatory periodontal diseases is dental tartar cleaning. In cases in the early period, the tartar cleaning may be sufficient, but in cases where the inflammation is not limited to the gingiva and spread to the hard tissue (periodontitis), the tartar cleaning is not sufficient and in addition, a curettage treatment is required.

In cases in the early period, the tartar cleaning may be sufficient, but in cases where the inflammation is not limited to the gingiva and spread to the hard tissue (periodontitis), the tartar cleaning is not sufficient and in addition, a curettage treatment is required.

The curettage treatment is directed to the cleaning of the tartar accumulated under the gingiva, while the tartar cleaning removes the tartar accumulated on the gingiva.

In a curettage process, a small amount of local anesthesia is applied to the relevant area. First of all, superficial tartar is cleaned by the tartar cleaning. Then, the tartar under the gingiva is cleaned from the interface of the teeth and the gingiva. No pain is felt during the procedure as it is applied under local anesthesia. After the procedure, a minimal dose of pain and hot-cold sensitivity can be observed. An analgesic prescribed by your doctor will eliminate the pain. After the procedure, the teeth should be brushed and an antibacterial mouthwash containing chlorhexidine should be applied.

In cases where the curettage treatment is not sufficient, a flap operation is performed. The flap operation is a process of removing the gingiva with small incisions and closing it by means of sutures as the cleaning process is completed, in cases where an effective cleaning cannot be performed by means of the curettes.
