We can define inlays and onlays as dental fillings made in a laboratory environment.
Inlays and onlays are the last option before the dental veneers are applied in cases where there is more than enough material loss that can be restored with classical dental filling. They can be produced from composites just like the classic fillings, but they can also be produced from ceramics, thereby giving maximum aesthetic results.
In the treatment of inlay and onlay, the caries/damaged tissues are cleaned similar to the dental filling. The remaining intact dental tissue is measured, or data is obtained by a scanning method using a digital scanner. The obtained records (measurement or digital data) are sent to the laboratory. The tooth is covered with temporary dental filler. During the second session, the dental filling from the laboratory is adhered on the tooth with an adhesive.
